Windows 2000 Registry Maintainance

B

Bill

After a fresh install of Windows 2000 with all service packs, along with Office 2002 and
all service packs, along with the rest of my programs, I've got a nice, new Windows 2000
system (anti-virus not installed yet)

So, why does Norton WinDoctor (run from the NSW2003 CD, not installed) show me 80
problems in the ActiveX registry section? And why does it flag several missing shared
..DLLs? Should I leave these alone, or fix these problems? If not, can someone recommend
a safe and reliable WinDoctor-like program that I can trust to keep my new Windows 2000
laptop bug-free?

Thanks!

Bill.

I used to run windoctor some several years ago, but haven't bothered since,
and my busy win2k sys has run 24/7 since Dec04, when I changed hw, without
win problems
I don't run any other 'maintenance utility' other than Diskeeper and regular
AV and spyware scans.
But thats a personal experience.

Some of those entries might be from unused help files and other items
that will be there after use. Sorry to hear that you put Norton on your
nice clean system. The only general cleaning tool I use is CrapCleaner.
I recommend using Opera or Firefox as your default browser,Thunderbird
for your mail and AntiVir for your AV. I have written some pages that
might be of some help(see my sig below).

Nope, as I had written I did NOT install Norton, I ran WinDoctor from the CD. I know
that installing Norton would slow my system down to the speed of a herd of turtles
stampeding through peanut butter.

I think you would enjoy this page:
http://quarterbacks.org/Norton/
(this also resets the LiveUpdate subscription)

My present maintaince suite is V-COM SystemSuite 6. That's because any company that can
recover files from corrupted hard drives knows what they are doing. But their registry
cleaner is not intuitive and you really need to know what you are doing to use it.

The only general cleaning tool I use is CrapCleaner.

I've read good things about CrapCleaner, but doesn't CrapCleaner delete all log files,
including error logs and files needed for recovery?

I use IE as my default browser, Outlook for my email, Sorry to dissappoint. But FireFox
is still there.

Outpost is my firewall (with spyware turned off) and Spybot for my anti-spyware. My
anti-virus is SystemSuite 6 (who uses Trend Micro for their engine). After extended
testing I've determined that this is absolutely the least intrusive protection
configuration compared to anything else.

Actually, the only antivirus that's marginally less intrusive than Trend Micro is Panda,
but I can't feel comfortable with them.
