Windows 2000 pro network

I have a workstation running W2K Pro and 2 laptops running Win XP. I have a
wireless DSL (2wire Home Portal). I have a printer connected to the W2K
machine (USB). If possible I'd like to be able to share files and print from
the laptops. I've read everything I can find on how to set up a little
network but so far, no luck. The webpage for the system summary and firewall
show all three machines and their "names" but trying to add the laptops under
" My Network Places" "Computers Near Me" hasn't worked, undoubtably because
I'm doing it wrong. Anyone want to try and help me?

Thanks for the quick reply Dave. The laptops have wi-fi that works just fine
so the wireless routers might be alittle redundant.

As I mentioned in the first post, I have a wireless Home Portal made by
2wire. This is the equipment you get if you have SBC Yahoo as your DSL
provider. The wireless system works just fine. The workstation has no
wireless card it is connected directly to the router. The laptops are new
Sony VAIO's and have wi-fi. I'm interested in sharing some folders,and the
printer, on the workstation running W2K Pro with the laptops. The laptops are
running Windows XP Home Edition. I can go to the SBC System Summary page and
see all three computers listed by name and edit the firewall settings for
each. Because I'm not very familiar with W2K Pro, I don't know what I need to
do to get that workstation to recognize that network.

You'll want to create an account (in Users Accounts) on the WinXP machines
with the username and password that you use to logon to the Windows 2000
machine with. Likewise you'll need to create an account (in Users and
Passwords) on the 2000 machine with the username and password that you use
to logon to the WinXP machines with. Then you'll need to share out the
resource(s) with permissions for those users. Also make sure they're all
part of the same workgroup and on the same subnet. Then you'll no longer be
prompted for the IPC$ password (Inter-process communication)

In a peer level workgroup, when you try to access resources on a Windows
NT/2000/XP/2003 machine, Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 needs to authenticate the
user. If the user account doesn't exist in it's local account database, then
access will be denied.

You'll need to turn off the XP firewall and bind NetBIOS over tcp/ip to the
connection on Windows XP

I don't use a password to log on to the laptops should I create one? I may
need to ask for some help to do some of the tasks you mentioned, is that OK?

The password might be blank. Try adding the same user account on Windows
2000 with a blank password.
