Windows 2000 & Microsoft basic error

I am posting this problem in a few different places in the
hopes that someone will answer both problems for me.

Machine was running Windows 98SE perfectly optimized in a
network setting with HP scanner and HP printer attached
directly.
Software was Calypso for mail, Systemworks 2003 & the
Office Suite SB Professional (full boat).

I was not present when a tech came in removed Norton, used
Win 2000 upgrade and upped the op system to Win 2000 in
the "Windows Directory" he installed 3 users/passwords
including Administrator. He then reconfigured the system
to look to the server for Macafee as the anti virus and
firewall which was configured in such a way so as the
machine cannot get the net (via the network) unless
Macafee is downloaded form the server and installed in
the startup group locally. For some reason the Tech then
installed another install of Win2k in a C:\Winnit folder.
The machine shows the dual boot but both to the Windows
2000 system. The one that goes to the C:\Windows folder
crashes if selected on boot.

Client complained of error messages on boot and some
inoperative functions such as the scanner and the
printer. RSB booted machine and there was a "API polling
error "can't find the required files" message. Went to
administrative options and disabled API polling in the
startup. The rest of the Office 2000 package it all seems
to run OK but when you launch Excel it immediately opens
a PDF file (PDFwriter.XLA) and gives a compiler error a
few times. After saying "ok" to all the errors (maybe
three) it finally says "click ok to stop debugger" and
then proceeds "normally." I do not see anywhere to stop
the script debugger or to "default" Excel to some
meaningful opening page. Ran a Win2k (upgrade version)
and refreshed the install and this did not change any of
the issues. Ran a refresh using a standard Win2k version
and this allowed for the correction of many of the
problems such as the reinstall of the scanner and printer
with all requisite options. RSB optimized the machine
created a permanent paging file, installed (only the
utilities) Systemworks 2003, installed Spyhunter, scanned
and found 200 spyware viruses. RSB then optimized the
machine and all options. The basic problem with Office
still remained.

Ran the Office "repair option for both disks with reboots
in between, this did not fix the problems, ran a remove
of both disks and reboots in between. I did not alter the
registry during this complete uninstall for fear of
losing the client's associations and so forth. Did a
complete re install of both disks with "full boat"
options and the problem still exists. Ran the SFC program
and the machine reinstalled a ton of Win2k files despite
an reinstall to correct the previously mentioned problems.

So there are two issues:
1. How do I edit the registry to remove the 2nd and
inoperative/defective boot option?
2. How do I correct the compiler, debugger or MS Basic
error?

To fix the dual boot issue:

Look in the root directory of your C: drive and locate the fil
Boot.ini

Open the file and look under the section [operating systems] you wil
see listings similar to this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 200
Professional" /fastdetect

look fot the line that has \WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows ...

delete that line and it will no longer show up as a boot option.

To fix the PDF problem:

Look in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\xlstar
directory and delete the PDFWriter.xla file.

you might want to make a copy of PDFWriter.xla and your boot.ini file
into another directory just in case:)

If you have any questions or need additional info just let me know.

Good Luck,
Rand
