my free diskspace went to 0 after being around more than 40 GB in the
morning. I looked for .tmp files and all but nothing of that sort
existed. I also tried to get a sum of the space of all directories on
the C drive and the number came out to 13 GB. I tried to do a sum of
all the files in the C drive and the sum came out to 20 MB. And yet
the C drive shows to be 55 GB in size. I did resource monitoring last
night and it showed 100% CPU utilization when nothing was really
running. I figured imy computer was hacked and I disconnected from
internet. It is still disconnected and the resource utilization is
down to 2%. However, the space filled is still 55 GB

I have run it in safe mode and tried to repair disk but to no avail. I
have used WD diagnostisd but to no avail

I do not know what to do other than partition the hard drive again.
Desperate for help

Thank You

Temporarily disable your virus scanner & run SCANDISK. It should correct the
disk space for you.

Don't forget to re-enable your virus scanner though

I will try this out - would uninstalling the virus scanner, running
scandisk and then re-installing it do the same thing?

Also when you talk about scandisk, are we are talking about going into
Computer Management window and running "Rescan Disks" in Safe Mode

Thank you

I am afraid that I followed the steps you suggested but came up with
the same problem. Not sure if I am doing it right. I ran scandisk in
safe and regular mode

If your computer has been compromised via the Internet, it may be best
to back up all your data and then format and reinstall. You have no way
of knowing what back doors have been installed on it. If for some reason
that is not an option, then it seems that the files taking up the space
or their containing folders are marked as hidden and/or system files.
Also, look for extra user accounts.
