I have a acer laptop. The other day the screen said ... "NO OS FOUND"
so I thought hmmmm ... I am going to have to get the resource disk out
and reinstall my OS. Well I stick the disk in the drive and it says
loading windows 98 and it goes on a bit and then stops and the screen
turns white. I am able to open up dos but I don't know how to get the
laptop to read off the cd and start installing ... any clues. I have
tried

D:\> run
D:\> setup
D:\> boot
D:\> setup.exe
D:\> open
D:\> winxp.exe

I am at my wits end and need to find out how to get the os back on my
laptop. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi ... Go into your bios screen and see if your hard drive is listed and
whether its selected as your first boot order ...

it is set to read the cd first

Hi Jonathan,

Do you have a Diagnostic program that checks your memory out? I have a
friend who had No Os Found on a Compaq Laptop. After restoring the Laptop
and Hard Drive, same problem occurred. Turns out the Memory Card in his
computer went bad. After replacing the Memory Card and restoring the
operating system, the problems vanished.

You may have a bad Memory Card in your Laptop computer.

Everything is depended on the Memory Card.

This includes the ability to boot from a Bootable CD.

Now I have it so it goes into recovery ... but then it asks for the
recovery cd and when I put it in it spits it back out.

"Please remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive, put in the recovery CD
and then press ok to continue."

It is the recovery cd.Any thoughts

Change that to your hard drive , make sure you save that setting afterward ,
See if that help

"loading windows 98".. You meant "Loading Windows XP", I hope.

A few thoughts:

- "No operating system".. that suggests the hd has failed. Reinstalling
to that hd could be an "exercise in futility".

- W98 wouldn't be able to read, or write to the NTFS-formatted hd. That
could cause an aborted install..

- As the computer is booting, you can sometimes press F10, or F8, F5,
Esc, to get to Safe Mode or another area where you can do a system restore.

- In "DOS" (CMD Prompt) type:

D:\> DIR (to see what executables are there.)

- There are plenty of other things to try before reinstalling.. maybe
an FDISK /MBR command.
