Window xp pro hangs and won't shut down

Hello everyone,
I'm running windows xp pro and lately it has become somewhat slower until I
run a registry problem chevk and then an active x remonal. I'm also running
an adware removal program that seems to find threats all the time. I'm
firewalled with a DSL connection and I'm the latest norton anti-virus
software and up dates. Ibought "Norton System Works" and installed it and it
seemed to only make the problem worse. When I go to shut down I get a
message: DDE Sever program Not Responding". Then I have to manually re-boot.
Can Someone please help.
