Window tabs

When I open a page on internet explorer, the window tab appears on the
taskbar.
When I open a second window on the web, the new window tab appears on top of
the first tab on the taskbar.
For each web page I open, the new tab is placed on top of the first tab.
When I hover the pointer over the taskbar tab, there is no other page under
it.

The “Back†button is not highlighted, as I move to a new window. So I can’t
go back.
The Address bar shows no previous addres.

When I close the page, it closes the internet connections.

I have looked on the Windows XP help page, but found nothing that talked
about this problem.

When I right click on the taskbar and click on “properties†the only items
that are checked are
Keep the taskbar on top
Show quick launch.

I don’t have this problem when I’m working in windows. All of the window
tabs line up next to each other.

Can any one help me with this

Thanks

Didn't fully understand your Q, however you might be reffering to the
group similair programs option, which means if you have two ie's open
and you click on the icon on the taskbar you get a list of all the ie
windows open. to disable this: start/settings/taskbar/startmenu>
uncheck group similair icons. otherwise give me more details.

Microsoft decided that when one opens a new IE, he/she doesn't want the
old IE anymore. Try this:

1) In IE, open Internet Options from the Tools menu
2) Select the 'Advanced' tab
3) Uncheck the option 'Reuse windows for launching shortcuts'
4) Click 'Apply'
5) Click 'Ok'

Hope this helps

I checked the “group similar program option†was not checked.

I’m really having a hard time trying to explain what wrong.

Let me try this

When I open msn.com, the web page opens and a window tab appears on the
taskbar. Say I want to read one of the news stories; I click on that story
link,
The web page opens, and the new window tab takes the place of the first one.
When I’m finished reading the news story, I can’t get back to msn.com,
because the window tab is gone, the back button is not highlighted and the
address bar shows no previous sites visited.

I did as you said. But I'm still having the same problem.

Thanks

So you open a browser, click a link and a new browser opens and the
original one closes?

If you mean the previous IE window is gone, if you have Yahoo Companion,
Google toolbar, MSN toolbar, a firewall, Earthlink (or another pop-up
blocker) My IE2 (a shell for IE) etc.
Yahoo Companion is a very common cause.

You'll have to turn off the feature that's blocking new windows or, perhaps,
uninstall the program (especially uninstall Yahoo Companion).

With some programs of this type, using Ctrl+click or Shift+click will allow
a new window.

If you're *sure* that another program isn't causing this, these links may
help.

I think this just might be user error. Sorry if you knew this already:

When you click on a hyperlink in any browser, the default is to replace
your current page with the new hyperlink. There are properties that can
be used in a hyperlink to make it open in a new page, but that is up to
the web-coder. If you want to go back to the site you were just on,
there is an arrow near the top-left corner of your browser that points
left. When you click on it, the browser will navigate back to the last
page you viewed. There might be settings to force all hyperlinks to
open in new windows, but then your workspace will get cluttered.

It might be too much, but you could try uninstalling IE and then
reinstalling it with Add Remove Programs / Windows Components. If
nothing works, you can at least get by with a different browser such as
Opera or Firefox until you figure it out.

I tried all of the links you gave me. But none of them worked.
It is starting to look like format time.

Thank you for your help and the useful links I have printed them out to keep.

Ok. I'll stop bothering you after this:

Have you run a virus/spyware/adware check?

and one more thing to try

1) Go to Internet Option in Tools menu
2) Click 'Settings...' in the 'Temporary Internet Files' section under
the 'General' tab
3) Click 'View Objects'
4) Delete everything in there just to be safe
5) Restart your computer

Good luck,
