Hi, My WMP used to play DVDs but now I only get the sound and the picture is
just horizontal lines. I've tried it with a couple of DVDs and it is the
same. It happened after I downloaded a AVI to DVD program, I deleted it and
found my WMA files wouldn't open so I restored to the day before. My DVDs
play OK on power DVD. Can someone tell me what now, I think I've done
something wrong? Thanks

When you uninstalled that other program it must have removed some needed
drivers within WMP so how bout reinstalling WMP.

Hello,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, I suggest you try the following steps:

Step 1: Remove all current Video Codecs:
=============

1. Click Start, go to Run, type in "DEVMGMT.MSC" and press Enter.
2. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers".
3. Double click "Video Codecs".
4. Click on the Properties tab.
5. Remove all codecs there by selecting them one by one and clicking on
"Remove".
Note: there will be warning information, please click "Yes" to confirm it.
6. Click OK.

After removing all codecs, please restart the computer.

Step 2: Reinstall all default Video Codecs
=============
1. Click Start, click Run, input "HDWWIZ.CPL" (without quotation marks) and
press Enter.
2. In the Add Hardware Wizard, click Next.
3. Click to select "Yes, I have already connected the hardware", and then
click Next.
4. Drop down the scroll bar and click to select "Add a new hardware", and
then click Next.
5. Click Install the hardware that I manually select from a list, and then
click Next.
6. Choose "Sound, video and game controllers" and click Next.
7. Click "Have Disk" and click Browse, navigate to C:\windows\system32 (I
assume that Windows XP is installed on C:.), click to select $winnnt$.inf,
and then click Open.
8. Click OK, click Continue Anyway.
9. Click Next. Follow the instructions to install the devices.

Step 3: Reinstall the third party Video Codecs
=============
I suggest you try to install the following 3rd codec.

1. Codec Installation Packages for IT Professionals
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx

2. DivX codec 5.2.1 for Windows
http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/

3. XviD Codec for Windows
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/xvid.html

I have performed lots of search in the internet. I found a great web site
about codes for Windows. Please refer to link below:
http://www.free-codecs.com/
From the web site, you will find common codecs for Windows, and then you
can download and install some of all to test issue again.

All the three steps above will help us to verify if the issue may be caused
by any other Video Codecs. If the problem persists, please try the
following further steps to test the issue:

Step 4. Use Clean Boot to eliminate third party interference
=============
To isolate the influence of additional applications, please boot the system
into a Clean Boot environment to see whether this problem continues:

1. Unplug all the unnecessary devices, with only the keyboard, the mouse
left.
2. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
3. In the Startup tab, click the "Disable All" button.
4. In the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox,
and then click the "Disable All" button.
5. Click OK and restart your computer.
