Win98 can not see XP

I am setting up a network for a friend and Win98 can not see XP (no icon in the
network folder and when you do a \\name\ it does not show, not even itself. I
have checked all fire walls, work group names, netbios over tcp/ip and I do not
see any cause for this. When you shut down the 98 machine you do get the msg
that there are other users on the network and they will not have access when you
shut down.

Below is a copy of the IPCONFIG. Notice on the XP machine it says "NetBIOS over
Tcpip. .: Disabled", when in fact it is checked in the Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) advanced box.

NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled on the XP computer's PPP (dial-up)
connection. That's OK, since the computers should be using their
Ethernet connections to communicate.

I have some questions about the network setup:

1. Both computers show a PPP adapter with a public IP address. Do
they both dial in to the Internet, independent of each other?

2. Is there a third computer, that you didn't mention, that's running
Internet Connection Sharing? Is there a broadband router connecting
the two computers? I ask because both computers' Ethernet adapters
have 192.168.0.x IP addresses and show 192.168.0.1 as their default
gateway and DHCP server.

3. What IP address does each one show for the other one? To find out,
open a command prompt window and ping the other computer by name. It
should show 192.168.0.x. If it shows the public 208.6.x.x. address,
that's the problem.

Make sure that XP's Internet Connection Firewall is disabled on the
Ethernet connection. Un-install, don't just disable, all firewall
programs while troubleshooting the network.
