Win32 Generic Host Process error and 'svchost.exe' error

HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

After connecting to the Internet within 5 to 30 minutes I get a Generic Host
Process for Win32 error. After that I receive 'svchost.exe' error message
stating

"The instruction at "0x77c43dbd" referenced memory at "0x786f5138". The
memory could not be "written".

If I try to close either of the boxes out I get knocked off the Internet and
have to restart my computer to get back on. If I try to get back on without
restarting I get a message stating that my moden is is use or not working
properly. I have checked my modem, run my anti virus and spyware programs,
ran an on-line virus scan and do not know what else to do.

I have Windows XP with the Service Pack 1 on my computer.

Are you on dialup or high speed internet? If high speed, is it cable or dsl?
Are you using a router?

Hi,

I still have dial up and I'm not sure if I am using a router, I don't know
exactly what that is. If you have any suggestions I would appriciate it.

If I had to make a guess without looking at the PC, you may have yourself a
virus. A lot of them are constantly trying to do things on the internet, and
when they get a connection, they start downloading other trojan programs,
popups, and the like.

The first thing you should do is get yourself some up to date virus
protection and run a scan.

The second thing you should do, if its available in your area, is get
yourself some high speed internet access. You'll never go back to dialup.

The local phone company usually has a deal you can get with DSL to where its
plus or minus $10 the same price as dialup.

Is there some place that I can find more detail about how to do all of this?
I am somewhat computer literate but am not that famaliar with how to
reregister the dll files that you are talking about or ever where to find
them.

Thanks!!

First, thanks for the response. I cannot rename the folder
SoftwareDistribution as it tells me that the folder is in use or is read
only. When I try to change it to not be read only it won't stay that way.
If I leave Auto Updates off, the problem goes away but then I am not getting
the updates for Windows XP. Any other thoughts??

Thanks.
