generic host process for win32 services

Every other time when I start my computer (or sometime after it starts), I
receive the following error message: generic host process for win32 services
has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the
inconvenience". After that, I have problems: my computer does not
recognize my sound device, and I get an annoying browser re-direct from
google searches. When I select "Turn Off My Computer" from the Start menu,
it takes several minutes for the "Log Off/Restart/Shut Down" box to appear.
If I restart my computer, the original error message may not happen again for
a couple of days. It happened this afternoon, and the sound did not
disable, but I do get browser re-directs. I have run Windows Live 1 care,
Adaware, and Spybot & have not found any problems. I have also followed
steps to correct this error on microsoft's site: Article 931852
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931852/en-us?sd=gn). This has been
occurring
for a couple of weeks now.

The error message in the event log looks like this:

Date: 4/23/2009 Source: Application Error, Time: 5:16:08 PM Category
(100), Type Error, Event ID: 1000, User: N/A

Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.5512, faulting module
unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x10001e39.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The link listed in the error does not work.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

thx,

David

Your computer is most likely infected.

Before you show your computer to a professional (which I recommend), try
scanning your system with /several/ of the better online scanners, such
as the scanner from Kaspersky Labs:

http://usa.kaspersky.com/products_services/free-virus-scanner.php

Also to try: Download HijackThis from www.trendsecure.com. Run it, save
a log, and post the log at one of the many sites that support HJT, such
as spywarewarrior.com, bleepingcomputer.com, and http://aumha.net -- but
not here. Within a day you'll have advice from an expert on cleaning up
any malware infestations.

Two easy and free anti-malware programs to try are Malwarebytes Anti-malware
(MBAM) and SuperAntiSpyware (SAS).
These two free programs are highly recommended in various newsgroups.
MBAM is available at: http://malwarebytes.org/ dl the trial version,
install it, update and then run it.
There has been a problem with folks going to Google and typing in Malware
Bytes (instead of MalwareBytes) and getting a malware site which offers a
free progam and then installs malware and finds phoney stuff and wants you
to pay to have it fixed..
Please use the home site that I listed above.
SAS is available at : http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html dl the
free version, install it, update it and then run it.
