win2k upgrade checklist

Mike

I have a Win98 SE PC that i want to upgrade to 2K. I want to do a clean
install, and natch I can't find my 98 CD, but I have my 95 CD so I guess
that's not an issue. The machine consists of one 20G and one 30G HD.

1. Do I need to format, or will an fdisk take care of the issue of nuking 98
and all files? (I've backed up everything I need onto my new PC, this one
goes to the wife)

2. Is 20G large enough to have an OS partition and an APPS partition,
leaving the 30G for FILES? How much space does Win2K need?

3. The 30G drive was added using Maxtor's Maxblast, when I fdisk will that
go away and leaving partitioning management to Win2K?

4. At what point will the install offer to let me fdisk/format? I can boot
from CD, I want to make sure that it will let me nuke 98 during the install
so that i don't do an "upgrade" (read: trash).

Thanks in advance. I've been collecting drivers, the only thing I'm worried
about is if the MB needs a bios upgrade. I have it, I'd just rather not do
it. Will the setup scan tell me about that too?

Hi Mike
1.Fdisk gives you the option to delete and create partitions to whatever
size you choose. when you delete the partition all the information is lost
on that partition.

2. 20 Gb should be enough for Windows 2k an your other applications
depending on what you are installing. Windows is normally between 700MB and
1.5Gb and MS office is about the same.

3.Fdisk should see the partition that was created in maxblast and shouldn't
remove it unless you tell it to.

4. If you boot off the CD it will give you the option to pick the partition
you want to install windows to it also asks if you want to delete that
partition which should take you into fdisk.

lastly the windows install wont ask you about upgrading your MB

here is a link which tells you how to install windows 2000 pro
