I have a comp with 256mb memory and 80gb hdd. the hard disk is partitioned
into 3 drives (c:,d:,e:). i have win98 on my C: drive, winXP on D: drive and
nothing except a few files on E: drive. i decided to upgrade win98 (on C:)
to win2k pro(from CD). installer told me that it would not upgrade but do a
clean install. after initial steps, win98 restarted. while restarting, i
removed the CD. I got 3 options in OS choices menu - Win XP, Win 98, win2k
pro setup. i decided to install 2k later, so i chose to open winXP.
Shockingly win 2k pro setup (or something like that, but it said 'loading
Win2k') began to load. it said a file setup.alt was missing and that i needed
to repair
the setup files.WHERE HAS MY WINDOWS XP GONE?. i need it back. i want to
kill or remove this win2k pro setup. please tell me how to!!!!!!!!!

Let's get some facts for starters:
- On which drive & folder is your WinXP installation?
- What is the contents of the hidden file c:\boot.ini? (Try notepad
c:\boot.ini)
- Did you ever install Win2000? The menu you did not get there by itself -
it relates to some previous activity!

The first thing you should do is run Windows XP recovery console to
replace the hidden files ntldr and ntdetect.com in C:\ with the
versions from the Windows XP CD. Then you should be able to boot
Windows XP from the hard drive.

Click on Edit boot.ini
Remove Windows 2000 line.
