WIn2k install nightmare!

I am doing a fresh reinstall on a xp 1700 with asus a7v8x-
x mobo after getting an acpi error on previous boot. Have
flash upgraded the bios and fdisked/formatted hard drive,
a WD 20g ata, with win98 boot disk. However, cd installs
hangs at initial installation with error:

Unexpected error (53685428) occured at line 1562 in
d:\nt\private\ntos\boot\setup\arcdisp.c.

Hardware all new off the shelf and have tried floppy
install but same error. Graphics is ati rad.
