Followed previous suggestions and rey again.
Akamai cert is invalid

Clear cache, remove update class, replace iuctl.dll with one from svc
pack and try again:

Thanks for the pointer but....

Windows Update may solve this problem. Be sure to enable them again
when you complete the update process...
It is also woth noting that the new Active X control, used by V4 of
Windows Update, collects patch information and sends/receives that
information over port 443, instead of port 80 as in the past...
If you have port 443 blocked at your router/firewall then try
unblocking it."

Not very F'ing likely: open the service port that causes ALL the
problems in the first place.
And the suggestion to disable firewall and virus scan is like
suggesting to drop trou and bend over.
Christ! This is making Linux/Samba/Open Office look more and more
worth the effort.

Now then <post rant> to which, precice please, IP address must 443 be
opened and in which direction - please don't suggest inbound...
IE is already permitted "8 ball" access: any ip any port, so I don't
know what else I can do to open up IE access.

<final rant>
*Akamai* is PERMINANTLY blocked in hosts, the firewall, the virus
scanner and in the router and will remain that way. If I could force
the ISP to block it too, I would.

It appears that the inmates are finally in complete charge at M$?
