I have a machine that I replaced the motherboard on. The hard drive had
Windows 2000 Professional. When I start the computer in Win2K and attempt to
perform the upgrade to Win XP Pro I get the following error:
Windows XP Professional does not support upgrading from Windows 2000
Professional to Windows XP Professional.

According to the upgrade path available on M's web site, it shows this is a
valid path. What gives?

It appears you acquired an "OEM version" of Windows XP Pro.
That version can only be installed by reformatting the hard drive.
You'll need a "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Pro
in order to upgrade over an existing Windows 2000 installation.

Unfortunately, Microsoft's web page for upgrdes does not specify this
requirement. If this were the case, this item would not have been purchased.
Why doesn't Microsoft indicate this on the Upgrade page? Now you are telling
me I have to spend another $200, even when I already purchased a license to
do the install.

Sure it does:

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional:

Windows XP Professional Retail (Full) Version
Windows XP Professional Upgrade Version
