WIN2K / IE6 http authentication issue

I have a windows 2000 box that I am trying to get to the site:
http://mlsni.rexplorer.net/cmps$nir/xploresearch.htm

it has a pop-up http password. Whenever I try to type my
username/password it brings back the pop-up a few times and then to a
blank white screen.

trying this same page from a different machine on the same network
works. trying this same page from firefox from the machine in quesiton
works as well. Trying a different http pop-up login website from the
machine in question works as well.

finally - if I am on a different computer and type the worng
username/password it will say "Wrong username/password page" - never
just a blank white page as with the troubled computer.

SO it seems to be an issue with IE6 and this particular page.

I have reduced all security settings to LOW, installed all the
patches..still no luck

Any ideas?

thanks in advance

I assume you mean you are retrying each time with an incorrect
User name/Password combination?

and then to a blank white screen.

That could be the site's prerogative to try to stop misuse
of their authentication facility.

I tried once. I did not get any indication of error, only was
re-presented with the same logon prompt window.

I then pressed the Cancel button and saw only the bottom line
from the following response packet:

<example>
HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized
WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="CMPS_NIR"
Content-Length: 44

this agent/password combination is invalid

I suggest you contact the administrator of the site and discuss
your observations with that person. If you need to analyse their
validity I suggest you take packet traces of each case and compare
them. It could be perfectly reasonable for different classes of
connecting user to each see a different user interface by design.

thanks in advance
