Win2K Backup won't recognize (or import) new media.

I have a low end server running 2K Server, SP4, with a 10/20 Travan drive.
The drive is recognized by the system and I have performed test backups on it
before. When I went to erase my test backups and begin making regular
scheduled backups, I think I "erased" the tapes incorrectly. I went to the
Restore tab in backup, and deleted the tape listing there (instead of
choosing Erase/Format).

I thought I would then be able to erase/format the tape, and overwrite it.
Unfortunately now backup knows this is not a blank media, because it has been
written to previously. I am unable to erase/format, or otherwise import the
media as an available media pool. I even tried going into Removeable Storage
in Computer Management. I read a knowledge base article that described how to
import and prepare NEW media. This is not NEW media. It has been assigned an
ID, and the description deleted. The only thing to do in Removeable Storage
is to click on the "Tape" icon. The RS directions say to then right click,
and choose erase. However, there is no options other then 'refresh' (Again, I
believe, because the description was deleted).

I am now unable to get any backups to perform on these used tapes, even
though the "always overwrite media in the drive" option is set. It gives me
an error and says there is no usable media in the drive, even though there is
a perfectly good 10/20gb tape installed and ready to be overwritten.

Help!

How do I re-import the tape, or get it to be recognized as an available media?

I am going to begin using NEW tapes so I can at least get the backup
started, but I still have a large cache of used tapes I would like to reuse.
Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

You can use tip 7925 in the 'Tips & Tricks' at http://www.jsiinc.com to write a freemedia label.
See tip 2265 for the unmanaged media option.

I encountered the same problem, but the fix requires hotfix 831740 to work,
is there
anyway to get this hotfix without paying MS for a support call?

Yes, ONLY ask for the hotfix, and nothing else.
