Removable Storage - Unrecognized Media

THis Problem relates to Windows 2003 Server, but i cannot find a board for this

THe problem is as follows:

-I put a new tape into the tape drive and use NT Backup to back up some
files, and give the tape the name of "monday".
-When i look in the Removable Storage -> Media, i see the tape called "monday"
- When i reboot the server and look in Removable Storage->Media, although
there is a tape called "monday", it is actually seeing the tape ini the
drive as a new tape of type "Unrecognized Media"

It seems that following a reboot, the server no longer recognises the tapes
that i have set up

Any ideas

Did you first use Removable Storage Manager (RSM) to prepare tapes?
You should.

OK, can you confirm what you mean by "Prepare" the tapes. I used RSM to
"Free" the media, then used NTBackup to write to it. Is there something more
required?

Cheers

I used RSM to "Free" the tape, then NTBackup to write to the tape and give
it a label

Is there something more i need to do?

I get the same problem with an ADIC tapeloader. It seems that if the server
is rebooted with the media in the drive and not in its home slot, on reboot
RSM renames the media to the next sequence # and places it in the
\Unrecognized Pool. The original media is then put into "offline" status.

I do nto have a fix for this although I would really appreciate it if
someone could post an answer.

Cheers!

Got it working in the end.

Turned out that i needed 3 separate hotfixes from Microsoft, although they
mainly relate to Travan tapes, some of them may apply to you. The KB articles
are:
817765, 823820 and 825742.

All of these have been included in W2003 SP1, so we are going with that

Hope this helps
