Removable Storage Issues

Hi,

We are currently having issues with two of our Windows 2000 servers. Both
of these machines are used for backup purposes. Recently we have found that
the Removable Storage Manager isn't recognising that tapes are in the tape
drive. Stop and Restarting the service seems to get it back on track, but
this is obviously not something that we want to be doing on a daily basis
just to make sure our backups are working. The problem did not exist before,
but the only thing that has changed has been moving from a DDS3 DAT tape
drive to a DDS4 DAT tape drive. Are there any known issues with the Windows
2000 Server Removable Storage Service and DDS4 DAT Tape Drives, or is there
something else entirely that I should be looking at?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

No issues with DDS4 DAT drives other than having to
tell ntbackup.exe the name of the new drive. If you use
the Task Scheduler to back up your data then you
must modify these tasks to reflect the new tape drive.

How do you tell ntbackup.exe the name of the new drive? If DDS3 tapes are
still in use as part of our tape cycle will this cause issues?

Easy:
- Create a new scheduled backup task, using the wizard.
- Have a look at the command line it generated in the Task Scheduler.
- Compare it with the Command line used by the existing
scheduled task.
