win2003 fax service

the windows 2003 fax service breaks if one changes the computer name.
fax manager will come up with an error saying the fax server can't be
contacted; check if the service is running" then it loads and shows the
local fax server but gives "access denied" when trying to get properties on
it.
how do i make it work with the new computer name? uninstall/reinstall fax
server does nothing.

actually ignore this for the time being.
i'll try again when i actually install a freaking modem on the server :p
just a lesson on why not to migrate a server at 2am

with this other box.

Hi,
I quickly tried the same on one machine and it works for me - without an
install/uninstall. Can you give the exact steps on how you got into this
state?
Thank you,
Manoj

it either did it because i changed the name of the server or because it
became part of the domain (it is a dc now), the fax service was installed
before it was even a domain member i think.

i installed the service before i had the modem attached but i am pretty sure
i have done that before without ill effect.

I found the answer to a similar problem I was having. It was posted by Vonid
from Microsoft. This problem seems to occur when you try to install Fax
Services on a domain controller. Here is what Vonid said:

[Beginning]
Fax Service runs under the account NETWORK SERVICE. In most cases on DC,
such issues happen when applying the domain policy changes the policies that
apply to NETWORK SERVICE. The following policies need to be enabled for
NETWORK SERVICE for fax to work.

(1) Adjust memory quotas for a process
(2) Generate security audits
(3) Log on as a service
(4) Replace a process level token
[End]

If your having this problem on a domain controller then this is were you can
find the settings:
(Start | All programs | Admistrative Tools | Domain Controller Security
Policy)
In the left pane, choose Local Policies then User Rights Assignment. You
will then see the setting on the right.

If your having this problem on a local machine then this is were you can
find the settings:
(Start | All programs | Admistrative Tools | Local Security Policy)
In the left pane, choose Local Policies then User Rights Assignment. You
will then see the setting on the right.

I hope this helps.

I forgot to say that I needed to reboot after I made the changes. After that
the Fax Service worked like it is suppose to.

yes, for some reason NETWORK SERVICE and LOCAL SERVICE is missing from many
of the policies that it appears it should have when i compair it to a
working win2003 dc.
now this worries me as i don't know how many policies are missing their
settings and may affect other services.
i can't reboot yet, but i will update when i get a chance to reboot.
