Win2000 Slow Unlock

J

Jordan Reed

Hi,

the just started occurring to me a couple week ago, and I can't think what
might have made it happen.

Win2000 SP4

If user is logged in and the screen is locked, when I unlock the screen I
enter my username/password, click ok, and then screen goes blank with just
my desktop color showing for about 2 minutes. Then I'm logged in.

- This didn't start happening until about two weeks ago, before that it
unlocked responsively.
- I'm on an Exchange network. The problem occurs whether or not I am
connected to the network.

Any help?

What is your icon cache size?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

'Max Cached Icons' <-- Change to 4096, reboot & retry

I did some searches on the internet, and the indicated that in Win2000 the
default value for this is 500 and that valid range is from 1-2000.

This key did not exist in my registry so I added it and tried setting it to
2000 and then rebooted. This did not solve the issue. I then set it to
4096 and rebooted, but this also did not solve the issue.

So, it appears that my icon cache is not the problem. I only have five
icons on my desktop anyways. I also have no background image, just a nice
blank blue colour.

I thought perhaps my slow unlock could have something to do with a gina.dll
integration issue.

I _think_ I've got the original Win2000 gina file running, but I couldn't
quite tell. I removed all the extra ones. There was also one gina file in
my winnt/system32 directory called "QConGina.dll" that worried me a bit. I
can't find anything on this when searching the internet and registry keys
associated with it were similar to "Impersonate" and "Proxy". It also had a
date stamp of 8/16 which puts it right about at the time when my computer
started exhibiting its slow unlock.

I removed the file and it's registry entries, but the computer still isn't
unlocking at the proper speed.

Any more suggestions of where I could look?

Solved! I don't know precisely what the cause was, but I ran Adaware and
Spybots to remove all the spyware and it fixed the problem. Some nast
program.
