Win2000 Pro fails to start at bootup

After doing a clean install to a new HD Winn2000 Pro fails to start. It gets
as far as the splash screnn. The Starting Up progress bar completes then
nothing. The computer just hangs.

After a couple minutes I reboot the computer into Safe Mode with Networking.
It will start up and operate in that mode.

I checked the EventLog after the Safe Mode boot and found two errors but
they don't seem sever enough to hang the computer.

Error:
1) System Event Notification depends on the COM+ Event System which failed
to start because of the following error: No attempts to start the service has
be made since last boot.

2) The Server (a long number) did not register with DCOM withing the
required timeout.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks - Fred

Have you been able to boot this installation to Normal mode even once? Since
you can get to Safe Mode, try troubleshooting with MsConfig, following the
steps in Knowledge Base article 310560 How to troubleshoot by using the
System Configuration utility in Windows
(http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310560). Choose Selective Startup, uncheck
Startup Items, click on the Services tab, check the box next to Hide all
Microsoft services, and then uncheck any remaining items. Try to boot to
Normal mode. If you are successful, add back items in Msconfig, either
individually or in groups, until you have identified what is hanging.

You can get Msconfig from a Windows XP installation or follow the steps in
other posts to download it.

Fred, this might not be your problem if you were using 2000 on this machine
before and all you did was install a new harddrive but this is what happened
to me. I'm still in learning mode with 2000 so what I'm saying is just a
suggestion.

After I installed 2000, I decided to add a PCI Modem. After I installed the
modem and rebooted, mine would only boot to the splash screen but with no
error message. To troubleshoot I removed all my USB cables and rebooted.
It booted fine this time. I found out that my new PCI modem was conflicting
with the USB LAN that I used because the USB card was in a PCI slot. I
unplugged the LAN cable from that USB card and plugged it into one of the
onboard USB slots and everything is working fine. I went back and read my
modem book and it said that if I had any other modem in a PCI slot that I
would have to remove it. I didn't think about my USB LAN being a modem but
I guess it was. Things are fine now. Things that worked fine with XP (I
downgraded from XP to 2000) won't necessarily work with 2000. I previously
had an external USB modem that I used with XP but when I used it with 2000 I
couldn't shutdown without unplugging the USB modem first even though it had
drivers for 2000. The driver wouldn't unload fast enough during shutdown.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I had conflicts with hardware in 2000
that I didn't have in XP so the new hardware could be your problem (or not).
:)
