I was running Windows 2000 Professional as domain system,
and everything was working ok. For reasons too long to
explain here, I changed it to run as a workgroup system.
Now it aks me for a user name and password only, but when
I enter them, it tells me the "System could not log you
on". Does anybody know why is it doing this, and how to
fix this?

So you changed your from login to domain to login to workgroup? Only if you
know the local administrators password, you can login again. Else you need
to return the machine back to the network where it belongs and ask the
system administrator to rejoin it for you.

My guess is that you were logging on as a domain user before. Now
that you've unjoined the machine, no domain users can log on. If this
machine has been domain joined for its entire lifetime, it is likely
that the only usable local account on the machine is the local
administrator account. Hopefully you know the password. If you
don't, you can follow this link

http://securityadmin.info/faq.asp#password

to a part of the Microsoft Security FAQ that explains how to attempt
to recover from a lost password situation.

The laptop s from a company that is no longer in
business! The "domain" network nolonger exists. We
changed the workgroup from "XYZ" to "ABC" to set up a home
network. After restart the login box comes up and asks
for a UN/PW (no option to change domain). Upon entering
the correct UN/PW the computer responds that the domain is
incorrect. Same w/admin UN/PW.

I am in possession of the admin password - but it still
say the system could not log me on - please make sure the
user name and domain are correct and type the password
again.

Are you loggin into the local computerdomain now? You'll have to know the
administrators password that was used when W2K was installed. That might be
different from the domain-administrators password.
