win2000 cannot see winxp machine (mixed domain/workgroup)

I have a laptop running Win2000 Pro that is normally used in an office
environment as part of a domain. I have an existing XP home network
(workgroup) and would like to use the laptop at home and be able to
share a printer connected to an XP machine.

On the laptop, I get a correct IP address from the router and can surf
the net ok, but I cannot connect to the shared printer - I cannot even
ping the XP machine.

There are no firewalls being used, and I can see the workgroup from
the laptop in network neighborhood, but cannot see any machines within
the workgroup. Is there something I'm missing? I can ping the
laptop from the XP machine with no problem. I'm out of ideas...any
help appreciated.

If you can ping in one direction but not in the other then
this is almost always a firewall issue, even though you
may believe that there are no firewalls being used.

Thanks for your reply. I will go through the laptop again and make
doubly sure no firewalls are present. Am I correct in thinking that
aside from a firewall, there should be no problem sharing
files/printers between two computers (via IP address, not by name)
even if one is in a workgroup and one is in a domain?

Thanks!

The ability to ping demonstrates these things:
- A working physical connection, and
- A mutual understanding of protocols, and
- Operation within an accepted address range.

To share resources requires these additional things:
- The ability to resolve names into addresses, and
- The existence of the shared resource, and
- An appropriate permission structure.

The domain model is used for central validation and
for control of the logon process. It has no effect on
the ability to share resources.
