Accessing an XP workgroup from Win2000 Pro

Nathan Starr

I have an office-laptop (Win2000 Pro), configured for my
office domain. At home, I'd like to access files from my
home-PC (XP Home), and I have defined a workgroup.
However, in my laptop, if I define a workgroup, it screws
up its domain-based configuration.

What can I do? Thanks for your help

No need to change your laptop's domain membership - and don't do it unless
you enjoy groveling in front of your domain admin. ;-)

As long as you can get an IP address while connected to the home network,
and ping the XP home PC by IP address & then by name from the laptop, you
can map a drive to a share, whatnot, and provide the 'remote' credentials -
one way is thus:

net use x: \\computername\sharename /user:computername\username <enter>

Supply the password, and you should be authenticated. You can then use the
shared drive, connect to a shared printer, etc....

Configure a new workgroup and the workgroup name should be identical in both the notebook and the homepc. Additionally, install netbieu protocol in both the systems.
