win xp recovery controls

1) can I use a win xp retail edition (update) Cd to start up a damaged win
xp professional system (Sony OEM) to use the Windows XP Recovery console on
the damaged win xp pro (sony OEM) system.

2) If so, can I copy files from the My Documents folder of the damaged win
xp pro machine to it's R/W CD, floppy disk drive, or USB key? I have read
the Win P recovery console support document and it seemed to say that I might
not have access to files not in the system or root drive folders??

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

1) Yes, as long as you aren't using the CD to reinstall. You can do
necessary recovery work from the Recovery Console.

2) No, none of those functions are supported in the Recovery Console. You
can do it with somehting like Bart's PE (www.nu2.nu/pebuilder)

For complete instructions on the recovery process, please refer to
your Sony User Guide on "Reconfiguring Your Computer Using
the Sony Product Recovery CD-ROMs." You cannot use a retail
version of Windows XP in this instance. Many PC manufacturers
provide a means of performing a "non-destuctive" Windows XP
recovery operation using their Recovery CDs. Consult your Sony
product documentation for assistance.

Yes - that should work. You may also find that the Sony CDs will
support a 'repair' style reinstall as well as a complete slash and burn

You should be able to do so to A:, but not certainly to a CD and almost
certainly not a USB.
