Win XP Product Code

M

Mantis

Okay, two questions. Since I made the stupid mistake of
installing Win Xp Pro over my Home Edition on my laptop
and I don't have a Win XP Home Edition disc, how can I
get another Product Code for Win XP Pro so I can get rid
of this stupid 30 activation thing? Or in other words,
can I just purchase a new product key without having to
buy another copy of Win XP Pro? Or can my product key
for my Home Edition still be valid for the Pro Edition?

Second question, after I did this silly mistake, now when
I boot up my laptop, it always opens up my "My Documents"
folder. How do I get it to stop that?

Please help. Thanks.

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246

for the 2nd problem check your settings here:
Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

In the right pane under Userinit - Change the key that reads:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe
To:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

And also here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows.
In the right pane, check your settings under Load (mine is blank).

This problem can be caused by a Trojan virus.

Note you can save the registry key first by:
On the File menu, click Export.
In the File name box, type SaveKey, and then click Save.
Or create a system restore point prior to editing.
Note: If the registry key is not there, you can simply create one by going
edit>new.

If you have installed a legal copy of XP Pro, you should
be able to activate it via the web or by telephoning
Microsoft for the activation number.

If you sold the XP Home edition, you are no longer
entitled to use it legally on your computer. In any case,
it has nothing to do with your problem because you now
have XP Pro installed.

XP probably opens My Documents because there is a shortcut
to it in the Startup folder that is run when Windows
installs.

Find the Startup folder in Windows Explorer, and remove
the shortcut.

Greetings --

A Product Key comes with all legitimate WinXP Pro installation
CDs. No, the WinXP Home Product Key will not work for WinXP Pro.
You'll need to buy a legitimate WinXP Pro license, if you wish to use
it.
