Win XP Pro - Upgrade

M

Matthew

I am a user of Win XP Home Edition. I purchased Win XP
Pro edition not too long ago and went to upgrade in lieu
of a fresh clean install. Upon ugrading to XP Pro, all of
my dial up networking was removed from my pc. It would
only let me create a a broadband netowrk connection. The
dial-up modem infromation was all grayed out.

However when i conducted a clean install of Win XP pro,
the dial up networking was installed and every ran fine.
Any ideas?

This problem may occur if either of the following conditions is true:

-- You install Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows XP, and then use the
System Restore feature to restore Windows to a state before the installation
of the service pack.
-- You install SP1 for Windows XP when Windows XP Home is installed
and then you upgrade to Windows XP Professional.

The upgrade apparently corrupted your modem drivers. Hence, after the
upgrade they needed to be reinstalled. Why did it happen? Well, now you
know why many prefer clean installs. An upgrade should pick up all that
information, XP is pretty good about it but an upgrade install, even Pro
over Home Edition can cause some file corruption and that's likely what
happened.
