Win xp pro upgrade license ?

G

Guest

we just bought a copy of win xp pro upgrade for my mom.
we have two laptops in a desktop in out house with
windows xp home and wanted to know if i can install it on
all of them. I cant find anything online and the key says
use this key everytime you install it which implies to me
anyway that i can install it on all three as long as we
are the owner... does that make sense?

No, you can't. Win XP can be activated only on one computer. It's not like
software programs. It's the operating system. If you tried to install it on
other computers, you would not be able to activate and it would stop working
after 30 days. The key will only work on the first computer it's installed
on.

Just as it says, right on the box, you'll need to purchase a
separate WinXP license for each computer on which you install it.

As it has always been with all Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to
determine final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which
WinXP licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is
that Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) multiple installations using a single license.

You can buy additional licenses, assuming you have a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would
if you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

That sounds like some fancy out house you got there, but why do you keep the
laptops in the desktop? <vbg>
Where were you looking online? Outhouse world. Try Google next time for

It makes sense to me. Does it make sense to Bill Gates and the
boys? Noooooo. They want you to buy three separate copies of
Windows XP Pro at ... what is it, around $300 a pop? That's about
what it costs where I live. What "every time you install it" means
is, every time you install it *on the same machine*. Careless of
Microsoft not to make that clear to you, wasn't it?

If they can afford to keep two laptops in the outhouse, they can surely
afford to pay for the operating system upgrades. Of course, they can also
opt to keep the present operating systems on the outhouse computers!

Not that I disagreed, but I have to wonder about the OP's
priorities. I think I'd opt for indoor plumbing before I'd spend
money upgrading computers in the outhouse.

English is obviously not the OP's native language and these types of
comments are un-called for at best.

How did you determine that? And, if true, why wouldn't the OP
have posted in a newsgroup dedicated to his/her native language?
(FYI, the email address used by the OP belongs to Frenship High School
in Lubbock, Texas, USA.)

Does it hurt to go through life with no sense of humor?

Um, I am a professional translator and ESOL teacher.

Do you have any idea how many people in Texas don't have English as their
first language?
Does it hurt to go through life with no sense of humor?

If making fun of someone is your idea of humor, there's not much I can say
because you've said it all.

That's not any kind of answer, and you know it. What's your
source of evidence/documentation? Oh, that's right -- You've already
demonstrated that you don't believe in documentary evidence, and
prefer hearsay.

Of course it is; I have experience identifying the types of mistakes the OP
made. You could only make fun of him/her. How helpful.

What's your
source of evidence/documentation?

His post, naturally.
Oh, that's right -- You've already demonstrated that you don't believe in

Have you made the phone call yet?

Didn't think so.

How come you snipped this?:

The license is to use one copy of Windows on one machine and one only.
And always has been - hence the Product activation system to bring the
point home to you. You will need separate copies for each machine.
The key will be needed each time you install afresh onto the *same*
machine, or if you *remove* it from one and install to another.,

No need to make a phone call. I've seen a literally hundreds
of Microsoft documents (they're called EULAs, by the way) and quite a
few web sites that prove you wrong.

Because it really isn't relevant to your failure to cite any
specific evidence. Although, I will admit that the fact that the OP
is in Texas does increase the odds for your making a lucky guess.

Anyway, the OP's hitting the wrong key (R and T are adjacent on
the American keyboard) is hardly evidence of a language problem --
it's simply a serendipitous typographic error that lends itself to
humor. Deal with it.

I didn't think you made it. Heaven forbid you should ask Microsoft about
Microsoft. Those EULAs are out of date. Live with it. I just bought another
OEM last week with NO hardware from a reputable wholesaler. I asked them
about it and they told me that hardware is no longer tied to OEMs, as per
Microsoft. Now, if you want to know the truth rather than surf old web
sites, make the call if you have the balls to find out you're wrong.

Lucky guess my ass. You know damn well no one has an out house anymore and
that wasn't the only mistake he made.

I have dealt with it and you obviously think humor is making fun of people.
Did you beat up the little kids at school too?

It's so obvious it was a typo, perhaps Alias needs to work on his/her
professional skills and sense of humor. LOL
