xp home to pro with in place reinstall

Hi Guys,

With all the proper licenses to make M$ happy, can
I do an "in place" reinstall of XP Pro OEM on top of
XP Home OEM? (I am upgrading a motherboard and need to
do an In Place anyway and I want to go to Pro at the same
time.)

OEM is restricted to one motherboard. (Since
there's really no such thing as a PC, MS claims
their OS is licensed to the motherboard.) If you
have a new CD it's fine. Home or Pro doesn't
matter. If you have a full version it's fine. If
you buy the same motherboard again it's fine.
The only problem is if you have used an OEM
version on a different motherboard previously.

I have both the original OEM Home disk and a
separate XP-Pro OEM disk.

I was not sure if your reassurance that it would
be fine referred to licensing or the ability
to do an in place from home to pro.

Many thanks,

Sorry. I was just answering about the disks. If you haven't
used the Pro disk before then you can use it. If you've already
the Pro disk then you have no license for a new motherboard.

Whether it will work: I can't imagine why you wouldn't
want to install fresh, but... I don't know whether you can
do an overwrite install from Home to Pro.

Is the new MB the same as the old one, or are you upgrading to something else? License-wise, you are probably in
violation with XP Home that's already installed, as Mayayana poster. What I would do in this instance is put the new
board in, then make sure XP Home is working fine with all the drivers updated to the latest for the new board. Once
that's done (along with the 2 million reboots :) ), boot to the XP Pro CD and run the installation. It will probably
give you the "An OS has been found. Do you wish to upgrade it?" With your license key handy, go ahead and upgrade it.
That way you'll still have all your XP Home programs and settings without having to re-install everything. (I'm assuming
you're not updating from 32-bit to 64-bit, since this method won't work for that case.)
