Win XP Pro SP2 doesn't recognize my USB hard disk

Hi folks!

I've got an ASUS A6 SMP laptop with Windows XP Pro Edition SP2. My wireless
Logitech keyboard + mouse USB-connector works fine, so do the USB-connection
to my digi camera, aswell as USB for my Creative MP3 player.
But, the USB for my MAPOWER external harddisk stopped working! :(
I plug it in, Windows says "USB decice is ready for use" but after a few
seconds a yellow note pops up saying "USB device not recognized". There's
nothing wrong with the hard disk, I tried it at work. I ve been browsing the
net, this seems to be a common problem for many people.

I tried deleteing all USB stuff from the device manager. When I booted, all
USB stuff, except my HD works.
Please, come up with a fix for this. Do not tell me to re-install Windows.

The text above was the originally posted May the 7th in this ssame group.
There have been many replies to this post but the problem still exists. I
decided to repost this in order to shorten down the chain of post items.

List of things that I've tested:
-BIOS and drivers update using ASUS Live Update tool
-USB reinstall by deleting them from device manager
-OS upgrade from XP Home Ed. --> Pro Ed. SP2 is in use.
-tested all four USB's on the laptop
-tried out some strange Mapower drivers

Currently, I'll try to find an USB-Y cable, some people have told me this
could solve the problem. But I don't understand why an extra USB line would
do for this? I mean, the case itself gets AC power as normal through an
ordinary AC power cable.

Things to try:
-contact Mapower support

Appreciate any help in this case!

Brgds,
Magnus

Sounds as if the drive enclosure's USB chip doen't work
well with you laptop's USB ports. That's sad but not unusual.

Go to a computer shop with your laptop and test an
enclosure before you buy it.

You are right. An Y-cable makes no sense for AC powered drives.

The HD case worked OK the first few weeks. Suddenly, it stopped working.
Yesterday, my Creative MP3 player too wasn't recognized by Win XP in the
same way.

I guess it's some Windows update that has scrambled the USB settings in the
Windows registry. Could that be the case? Any fix for that available? Other
than reinstalling Windows...

USB for my digi camera and keyboard still works fine.

Appreciate any help!
