USB device not recognized

Hi!

I've got an ASUS A6 SMP laptop with Windows XP Home Edition SP2. My wireless
Logitech keyboard + mouse USB-connector works fine, so do the USB-connection
to my digi camera, aswell as USB for my Creative MP3 player.
But, the USB for my MAPOWER external harddisk stopped working! :(
I plug it in, Windows says "USB decice is ready for use" but after a few
seconds a yellow note pops up saying "USB device not recognized". There's
nothing wrong with the hard disk, I tried it at work. I ve been browsing the
net, this seems to be a common problem for many people.

I tried deleteing all USB stuff from the device manager. When i booted, all
USB stuff, except my HD works.
Please, come up with a fix for this. Do not tell me to re-install Windows.

Is the external USB drive being plugged into its own USB
port at the back of the computer? Or into a powered USB
hub?

It is plugged into its own USB port at the back of the computer.

There is a limit on the available current, microamps, that
is used for USB. Unplug the MP3 player or camera. Does the
external hard drive with either one disconnected?

No. I only use the keyboard+mouse-connector simultaneously with the HD. I
even tried unplugging this one, using the laptops keyboard. It didn't work.

Is there any fix available? Any BIOS setting? Any setting to change on the
HD itself? It's a Maxtor 250 gb IDE 2,5".

Not enough power. Go to your nearest computer store
and ask for "Y" USB cable (and how to use it).

The hard disk gets its power from a regular AC power cable. How could a
Y-cable assist me in this?
I've been reading about this same problem around the web. Any common
solution available?
