I have a dell inspiron 8600 that just crashed. When I booted up the
machine today I got the message "Windows could not start because the
following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\System"
I have tried to use the recovery console to replace the system file but
when the console loads it hangs. I only have one instance of windows
installed and after I make that selection and press enter the computer
just stops responding. Is there any way around this besides a
reinstall? My hard drive is partitioned into a C and a D drive with
windows being on C:\. If I have to do a reinstall will I loose all my
data which is stored on the d:\ partition? Thanks for any help.

Can you give a more complete description as to just how the Recovery
Console "hangs"?

The Windows XP Recovery Console is a command line environment with no
graphic interface or menus. All you get is a Command Prompt like
this:

C;\>

At which point you can enter the appropriate Recovery Console commands
and their associatted parameters.

Good luck
