Win XP Pro can't support USB 2.0 device

Hi all

I am new to this newsgroup and would like to apologise if such a question
has been asked lately.

I have a brand new Gigabyte motherboard GA-EG31MF-S2 on my PC and I have
installed Win XP Pro 2002 with SP1. Once installed, I updated it to SP3.

Everything is running fine but USB 2.0 devices. Whenever I connect a USB 2.0
device, a warning message advising that device could run faster is
appearing. That by itself would not be a big deal, but my pocket 2.5" 160Gb
hard drive is "pure 2.0" and my PC can't read it.

I found a patch for this problem on microsoft website but the patch is older
than my SP3 and as such would not load.

Running CMOS setup, EHC controllers are up and running and reinstalling
Gigabyte motherboard drivers did not help.

I somehow believe there must be more elegant solution for this problem
rather than reinstalling the windows, installing the patch and upgrading it
back to SP3.

Any help is appreciated.

Regards

Click Start > Right-click My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device
Manager > Expand your Universal Serial Bus Controllors > They should have a
yellow ? besides them.

Right-click on them > Properties > update to USB 2.0 via a Net update by
Windows.

Your XP might be confused with the USB drivers. Uninstall all USB
devices, root hubs and controllers from Device Manager (if possible.)
Then, reboot and let XP redetect the drivers.

XP Pro certanly supports USB 2.0 devices.

When you did your XP install, did you also install the motherboard chipset
drivers? If you didn't, you commonly won't be able to get USB2 support.

Hi Patrick

Thanks for your reply. I have applied all Gigabyte motherboard drivers
immediately after installing the OS.
