Why would you be ready to format (I wouldn't call it reformat) and install
(again - I wouldn't call it reinstall) Windows XP because you switched from
the Welcome Screen logon to the classic logon?

Formating and installing Windows XP anew is usually *not* necessary. It
*may* be faster. It *may* do a lot of the house-cleaning that should have
been going on all the time in one swoop. It *may* fix your problem when you
do not understand what happened. It *is* rarely necessary.

thank you very much for the explanation. i did not change the login value.
i don't know how that happened. i have noticed that some of my system
settings have been getting changed lately and i don't know how. i ran
rootkit revealer and came up clean. this is very mind boggling to me how
these changes occur unless i am blacking out and making the changes and not
remembering doing it. now that's scary.

again, thanks for the quick response and exact answer to my question. i
have been hacked before and i thought it had happened again, maybe it has
with these changes being made to my system.

I have seen this happening after .Net 1.1 "Update" from MS gets installed.
Going to Windows Update site and doing Express updating fixes it for some
people.
Others have to go to Start | Control Panel | User Accounts | Change the way
users log on or off | put a check in (click the boxes for) Use the Welcome
Screen and also in Use Fast User Switching | Reboot
Some have to use control userpasswords2 and *then* check the two boxes
(above).

Let us know which works for you. [I'd rather not explain the last, unless
necessary.]

i went through user accounts and changed it there and all is well. thanks
all for the help.
