Hi,

I've been using a 3rd party backup program which is not that fast to backup
my hard drive, can I access/install the official MS Win XP backup program
onto my system ?

Thanks

Backup utility is not included in the default installation of Windows XP
Home Edition, though it is included with Windows XP Home Edition. It's
just necessary to do a manual install to prepare it for use.

To Manually Install the Backup Utility:-
Insert the CD Rom and navigate to CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP

Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file to start the wizard that installs Backup

When the wizard is complete, click Finish.

You can - but be aware that it is a tape oriented package, really
provided in Pro for people bringing forward their tapes from NT, and you
cannot use sets of CDs as output medium. And I doubt if it would be
much speedier than what you may have. The package I would suggest is
Simple Backup from www.sonic.com

I would recommend Acronis True Image which is easy to use and understand

Backup is installed automatically on XP Professional, but not on
XP Home. If you have the complete XP Home CD, find backup on the
CD, in \ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP and install it yourself by
doubleclicking the file ntbackup.msi.

If you don't have an XP CD,

you can download ntbackup.msi at

http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

Also see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302894

However, as backup programs go, the included Microsoft one is
amongthe weakest. You don't say what third-party program you're
using, but it's very likely better than the Windows one.

One more time everybody (paste this on your wall):

1. NT backup (ntbackup) is NOT an official MS backup program for windows
XP.

2. There is currently NO official backup program for windows XP.

3. You can prove this to yourself by trying to do a complete restore
from a backup image made by NTbackup from a windows XP operating system.

4. Its an older program made before Windows XP for Windows NT!

5. Its good only for backing up individual files or directories or
programs on XP--NOT the operating system for which it will NEVER work.

6. In other words, it is totally incapable of creating a restorable XP
image! XP didn't exist when this outdated program was created and it
wasn't made for it so stop the insanity--it won't properly image an XP
volume for crying out loud!

7. Check the Kim Komando sight to find out why.

8. Either wait for Bill Gates to produce a patched up version or buy
Norton Ghost--which is the very best and completely fool proof; used by
practicly all the IT professionals in the industry and thats a fact.
