Win XP 1394: camera not detected

F

Franz Schenk

Like a lot of others, I have the problem that my Sony DV camera is not
detected when attached to a 1394 connection. Have tried the following steps:

1. I can attach the camera at my old Dell Inspiron 4000 Notebook with the
SAME 1394 PC-Card and the SAME Firewire cable, and it's working without any
problem! The Adpater is detected and the camera as well and works witout any
problem: The following is installed:

VIA OHCI IEEE 1394 host controller
61883 class bus (something similar, my Win XP Pro is german)
AVC-Device
Sony-DV-Camcorder

2. When insert the same PC Card with the same cable and the same camera into
my new Dell Inspiron 8600, only the VIA OHCI IEEE 1394 Controller is
detected (and installed sucessfully in device manager), but not the other
three devices. Disabled the built in 1394 Port, and power on/off my Sony DV
camera (there is a MS KB article about that). No success.

3. Downloaded and installed MS Hotfix Q329256. Same result, no success.

4. Inserted the same card/cable/camera to my friends Dell Inspiron 8500, no
success, same result as on my Inspiron 8600.

5. Reinserted the same card/cable/camera to my old Inspiron 4000. Works
without any problems, but the computer is too slow for Movie Maker 2 when
record back to the DV tape!

Is there any known problem in device detection on PC with faster CPU's? My
old Dell has a P3/850 MHz, my friends one a P4 2GHz, I have a Centrino 1.4
GHz.

Can't use the built in 1394 port, because the Dell has a 4-wire plug, and my
PC Card has 6 wire plug. I don't want to buy a 30US$ 4-4 cable because it's
possible that this doesn't work as well.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!! According to NG posts, hundreds of users
are waiting for answers to this question. Are there any tools to trace/debug
the 1394 connecton?

$30 for a 4pin to 4pin cable???? Try EBay... you'll probably find one for
about $10 or less. I did. I've never spent $10 or so on a cable for
anything ....and never intend to!
