Video Capturing problem for Sony HC 40 E on IEEE 1394

I have a Sony handycam model HC 40 E.My desktop is fitted with IEEE
1394 card. The camera is detected immediately and the video capturing
starts when I coneect the camera with a cable of 4 pin(camera end) - 6
pin(computer end).
However if i connect the camera and computer with 4 pin - 4 pin the
camera is not detected.
Recently I purchased a new laptop Dell Inspiron 6400 with a built in
IEEE 1394 port. When I connect the camera to laptop with 4 pin - 4 pin
cable, the laptop does not detect the camera.
I tried with a different cable, the problem still remains.
I thought the problem may with the laptop, but my friend's camera(older
version Sony handycam) is immediately detected and video capturing
starts.
Isn't it strange that the video is captured when the camera is
connected to the desktop with 4 pin - 6 pin cable, but when the
connection is made with 4 pin - 4 pin cable either to desktop or
laptop, the camera is neither detected nor the video capturing starts ?
Please solvve my problem......

From what I gather looking into the manual, the 4-pin to 4-pin is used for
dubbing/editing with your model.

I also ran into a small tidbit that might be what you would have to do if the camera
doesn't operate properly using iLink.

Since I captured the info as graphic files, I placed them here for you to see.

Aside from that you'll have to contact the manufacturer to help out, it may also be a
compatibility issue.
