WIN UPDATE DOESN'T PERFORM SCAN

When I go to Microsoft Update Webpage, whether thru Help & Support or direct
clicking the icon in theStart Menu the Update Page appears with the "Welcome
to Windows Update...." When I click the arrow for Update to perform the scan
of my computer the page immediately changes as though it's doing the scan
and shows '0% Scanned'. But that's where it stays. It is totally inactive
after the arrow click.
If I click on the left window for it to read my downloaded list of items
previously done thru automatic update it will scan my computer and quickly
show the list of downloaded updates.
Any solutions please. Thanks Paul
