I've been using an external usb drive very happily for some time. When I
don't need it I turn it off. Today I turned it on and discovered that
windows explorer cannot see the device. It shows up fine in diskmgmt.msc and
in device manager but not win ex. Also I do not have the Remove Hardware
icon in my notification area. I've turned the disk on and off several times
but no change.

Can anyone help?

Has a drive letter been assigned to the device in Disk Management? If not,
can you assign one?

Assuming no drive letter has been assigned but you're not able to assign
one, try this...

After shutting down the machine, connect the USB EHD and power it up; then
boot.
Assuming that doesn't work, try booting up with the USB EHD *not*
connected/powered up; then connect and power up the device after bootup.

If still no go, let us know and we can go on from there.

Thanks for replying, Anna.

I've been using it for months as the F disk. I'm not able to boot with the
disk powered up and connected so I usually have it turned off and only turn
it on when I want to do backups. I just tried pulling the usb cable and
re-plugging it but that didn't help.

It's pretty strange that Disk Manager says it's Healthy (active) but it
can't be seen by win ex.

But does Disk Management indicate a drive letter has been assigned to the
drive?

If it has, tell us exactly what you see in Windows Explorer. It's not listed
in the left pane at all?
