Hi. I have been trying to network win98 and XP. I using cable for internet.
They both able to use internet (router). I have run network setup wizard on
both. Used the floppy created by xp on 98. XP sees the 98 in the hood but 98
says : unable to browse the network, the network is not accessible". They
both have MacAfee and in the utilities of the firewall i have put the IP of
each in the trusted folder. 98 needs to use the prinder that is hooked up to
xp over the LAN but because of failure to see xp can not use the printer. I
was wondering if anyone has a suggestion to solve this glitch. Many thanks in
advance!

Steve, thanks for the input! The network setting is shared level. At reboot I
do get a user and pass but never set a pass. How do I deal with that? what do
I put in for pass? In the primary network logon I have changed it to windows
logon with the hope of getting ride of that. I tried pinging but can not get
the 98 IP. when typing winipcfg I get 0.0.0. and releasing did not bring it
up. I am thinking may be xp somehow is not allowing the 98 to get in and was
wondering what I need to do with the xp to do so. I truly appreciate the time
you take on this!

Chris,

Asymmetrical accessibility and visibility, especially when computers on the same
LAN run a combination of Windows 9x (95, 98, ME) and Windows NT (NT, 2000, XP)
are involved, is frequently a browser problem. Please read this article.

The first step I recommend in troubleshooting network problems is to
uninstall (not disable) all non-Microsoft firewalls. Most don't disable
fully or properly. Check connectivity then and see what you get.

You're welcome, Chris. Using Windows Logon, log on with a user name
and no password. Network access should work, and it won't ask for a
logon again.

You must be looking at the wrong network adapter in Winipcfg. It's
probably the PPP (dial-up) adapter, which has an IP address of 0.0.0.0
when you aren't dialed into the Internet. Internet access is working
via your router, so the LAN IP address can't be 0.0.0.0. Click the
down arrow next to the adapter name and pick your Ethernet adapter
from the menu.

I don't think that any setting on XP is causing the problems on Win98.

You can disable the McAfee firewalls and see if that helps. That's
safe, because your router acts as a firewall, blocking undesired
incoming traffic from the Internet.
