Win 2000 Server and Windows XP SP2 Clients and Slow to open a File

Need2know

Hi,

I inherited a Windows 2000 Server with Windows XP Clients. THis is only
a 10 workstation network. Also, they activated Win 2000 Active
Directory. The problem is the browsing of the network shares are
somewhat slow. When you click on a document, word, excel.. it takes
about 12-15 seconds to OPEN.

I looked through this group and some threads seem to be close to this
problem, but none of the fixes have worked. I have all the latest
service packs and hot fixes on the server and clients. I disabled Virus
protection and it performs the same. Any more clues?

I'm ready to remove Active Directory (overkill). But don't know if that
will resolve this issue. I reviewed event logs on server and clients
but nothing has lead me to the answer. Help!

Thanks

Beagle

Is the active directory functioning properly? I've seen prople buy a servers
with a domain pre-installed and then sort of ignore it. Are the user
accounts AD accounts? Are the users logging into the domain vs their local
workstations? Are the workstations DNS settings pointing to the DC? Are
there multiple unnecessary protocols (Like NetBEUI, IPX, etc)? If you only
need TCP/IP, uninstall all the rest. Do you use WINS? Is it functioning?
These are the things I'd check first.
