Clients unable to see WINS server

Hi there,

I am having a problem whereby my windows 98 clients are unable to see my
WINS server at a couple of sites which are remote from where my WINS server
is located.

We were initially having a problem with WINS whereby our Windows 98 users
were not able to change their passowrd without being locked out of the
network, but we fixed that by rebuilding our WINS database on a server and
pointing the clients to that server via DHCP.

But now, all clients can log on but the ones behind our gateway are not able
to see the WINS server. We modified our router such that it now sttes that
netbios is accessed via our WINS server, but the clients can log onto the
network but cannot see the server.

Any Ideas,

You don't need to pass NetBIOS through the router for WINS to work. If fact,
the fact that most routers do NOT pass netBIOS traffic is precisely what a
WINS server is all about. There's nothing magical about connecting to a WINS
server. Since it's just your W98 machines, I suspect your 2K / XP clients
are using DNS. It sounds like a basic routing issue. Can your clients ping
the WINS server?

Kurt,

The users can ping the WINS server. And when you ping the clients from the
server you can ping the clients.

But if you search for the clients from the server you cannnot find them.

If you seatch for the server from the clients you cannot see it.

The other point to note is that the clients are not appearing in WINS if you
search for clients on the WINS server.

I was wondering whether or not this could be related to an inability to
resolve the ip addresses of the clients. I am going to try getting a client
to release and renew his ip address and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks Kurt, your saying the problem was a basic routing problem helped me
to solve my problem. When i checked my clients i found that they were
pointing to the wrong IP address for the WINS server, i used ipconfig to
release and renew the client configurations and all is now well.

Thank You
