JB

I have installed this beta software on 4 pc's XP and
2Kpro)with no issue whatsoever: BUT on a 5th XP pc that
was so loaded with spyware (even the desktop background
was hijacked I had to dump the login account)I cannot get
the software to run. "unexpected error, quitting" error
101 every single time. Followed all instructions as per
yahoo geocities and the FAQ's. I even downloaded and ran
the "installer cleaner" with no affect. I am at the end
of my rope here. Pls help..
Here is the msas ERROR LOG:

Hi JB,
I'm wondering aloud about an active virus. Have you a current, up to date AV
on your machine? If not, I suggest you go to PandaSoftware or TrendMicro and
do a free online scan.

I would suggest going into the machine by Safe Mode (F8) and checking your
IE options for Managing add ons; and opening MSConfig from the Run line and
seeing what is in startup that you can exclude for a while( or perhaps
forever). I would also dump Temp and TIF files.

Try those steps, and see if it improves the PC.

You are going to have to attack this thing head on hand-to-hand.

Go into Safe Mode and see what you can kill in the process viewer.
Go to the run command and type msconfig - go to Startup Tab and turn off
suspicious apps

Restart and browse to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and see if the
online scanner picks up any virii.

Try to reload MSAS, if yes then reboot to safe mode and run complete deep
scan twice. If no, go to www.majorgeeks.com and download/install Adaware SE
Personal and SpywareBlaster. Update and fully activate both and run them.
SpywareBlaster deactivates the ability of spyware to run and Adaware looks
for their files and registry entries.

You may also need to go into the WIndows and Windows\System32 folders and
delete obviously trojan named apps ie... a3d5gut.exe or dll - always move to
another holding folder, don't delete until sure it is bad.

Lastly, empty out every temporary file location - Windows\temp and the temps
under each Documents and Settings user folder. Dump the Internet Temporary
files as well.

It can take a half day or more to recover a badly infested machine but it
can be done. Then lock that machine down. There are several references in
these newsgroups for doing just that.

Hi JohnF:

Can you please elaborate on the "lock down" methodology
or point me to an info area for this?

Tks,

Bob,

Here's a short list to get you locked down:

Internet Explorer Security
Disabling Active Scripting in Internet Explorer 6
How to Manage Cookies in Internet Explorer 6
Blocking spyware via the ActiveX kill bit (SpywareBlaster does this)

Download SpywareBlaster from Javacool and get it up-to-date
Javacool Software

You might find this useful too:
The Code Project - HOWTO Lockdown Internet Explorer using a Trusted Zone
helper - JavaScript

Of course these are no bullet-proof guarantees and neither is Mozilla.

You could always go Linux or freeBSD but unless you like coding and hacking
or just need to do the basics, you probably won't stay long. It's kind of
like when city slickers think they want to move to Alaska: Clean air, low/no
crime, private weed farm etc... Most don't last more than 3 hours much less
3 weeks. It's a great place but it's not what you think it is.

Try to avoid warez, porno, and other "low rent district" websites that offer
a tempting item but infest you in order to make the website owner money and
possibly give them an owned computer to launch attacks from or to store FBI
tracked items on.

Remember FREE doesn't really mean FREE - you will pay one way or another.
