Error 101 after install on Microsoft Windows 2003 Enterprise

James O'Doherty

Hi

I've downloaded and installed the Microsoft Antispyware on
Microsoft Server 2003, Enterprise Edition Build 3790. When
I launch the Microsoft Antispyware program from the
desktop icon, I get an error that reads "Warning,
Microsoft Antispyware has encountered a critical error
(Error 101). Please restart Microsoft Antipyware again.
If you continue to experience this problem, please contact
Microsoft technical support at (e-mail address removed)
for immediate assistance."

Software works fine on Windows XP Professional SP2.

The files ERRORS.LOG has the following errors

Hi, I am having the same problem with Window XP, I
thought of uninstalling and reinstalling, has anyone
received a reply to this yet? And why is there no
support for this????? anything would be appreciated.
Thanks

Try this (it works for me).

If you get the critical error 101 message every time you
double-click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta1 desktop
shortcut ...

Simply create a brand new ASCII text file:
c:\windows\system\101.bat

Put this SINGLE LINE into that text file:
"c:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe"
-Embedding

THEN, whenever you get the critical error 101 message,
just type at the "Start -> Run" command line:
101
and then press the "Enter" key.

That will run the program above which solves the
problem temporarily (until the next reboot it seems).

I do this each time BEFORE I run the Microsoft
AntiSpyware beta1 on WindowsXP & it works for me!

I don't know WHY it works (what does the gcasDtServ
program do anyway?) but it works for me & many others.

Good luck,
Donna D.

Windows Security Expert

If you are running this gcasDtServ.exe Embedded line
constantly, it's better to modify the Windows registry:

Start -> Run -> regedit -> OK

Scroll down to the "App Paths" key:

HKLM->SOFTWARE->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion->App
Paths

Add a new key under "App Paths" called "101.exe".

Set this to the "101.bat" file (wherever you put it).

101.exe -> default = "c:\my data\my batch files\101.bat"

Where 101.bat contains the one desired line:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe" -
Embedding

Placing this key in the registry keeps you from clogging
up the windows system folder & saves your important batch
customizations (even after you install a new operating
system
which you should do every six months or whenever you change
your oil in your car).

Wouldn't it be best to just set the 101.bat registry key to
the microsoft spyware "gcasdtserv.exe -embedding" line?

I get this error every day after I reboot and then run the
microsoft Giant Spyware program but I want to follow
your "Start Run 101" recommendations.

BTW, I don't understand your comment about reinstalling the
windows operating system whenever you change you oil on
your car. I reinstall windows about once a year to clean
up all the junk. Should I do it every three months (that's
when I change my oil)?

Can you specify which fix?

The one in Steve Dodson's message?

The one in Donna Davidson's message?

What Windows OS version? Can you see, via Help, About, whether your
definitions are updated to version 4680?

I see program version as 1.0.501--not sure whether that is significant or
not.

If my update fix is not working, can I also have one person volunteer to
remove the application in the control panel, and then re-add it. Let me
know if that fixes the problem. Thanks to all who are posting on this error!
