I'm trying to reinstall XP.
I think I made the mistake by selecting the install icon
when I loaded the windows cd in the comouter when I was
in windows instaed of closing down and restarting with
the windows cd in it.

I'm trying to delete the partition and then create a new
one install XP again.
For some reason it will not let me delete the partition
and it comes up with this message-

SETUP IS UNABLE TO PERFORM THE REQUESTED OPERATION ON THE
SELECTED PARTITION. THIS PARTITION CONTAINS TEMPORARY
SETUP FILES THAT ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE INSTALLATION.

Is there anyway of getting around it - Ive tried
everything.
On Win 98 the startup floppy used to let you format and
delete partitons.
I also cannot get back into XP at the moment.

Any help would be very grateful

You need to put the cd in and reboot the computer. You can't do it from
Windows because you can't partition or format your current boot drive.
Boot to the CD and then from there delete the partition and create new
one(s) however you choose.
Then you can install XP and it will format your boot partition for you
during install.

You do it as part of a reinstall of the system *after booting the XP CD
direct*. Do not try running it from the present one in these
circumstances. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New
Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete
the current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one
