when I plug on my wifi adapter to the computer, the adapter auto connects to
a network.
how can I trun this off ?

I have disabled the Wireless Zero Configuration service, but this changes
nothing...

any idea?

thanks in advance

By design wifi NICs will show you a list of available networks, if
you can connect to a network other than your own, then ask your
neighours to enable at least WEP on theirs, or disable SSID
broadcast.

Wireless Auto Configuration, available in Windows XP dynamically selects
the wireless network to which to attempt connection, based either on
your preferences or on default settings. This includes automatically
selecting and connecting to a more preferred wireless network when it
becomes available. If none of the preferred wireless networks are found
nearby, Wireless Auto Configuration configures the wireless adapter so
that there is no accidental connection until the wireless client roams
within the range of a preferred network.

You type net stop WZCSVC at a command prompt to stop Wireless Auto
Configuration.

you could set WZero in windows and go into netwart, wireless connections,
highlight the ssid and select properties, select the connections tab.
Remove the checkmark from 'connect when this connection is in range'

Then you'll need to manually select available wireless networks and click
connect on the ssid when you want to connect..
