WIA Scanner Defaults Override (Setting Page Size & Resolution)

I have a Brother MFC (multi-function scanner/fax/printer). When I
scan, it calls up the Windows XP scanner & camera wizard and always
defaults to 100 DPI and A4 paper. I'm not even in Europe. It's a
pain to go through all the steps to change the resolution and page
size. Is there anyway to change the default? Or even better, to
create some alternative settings.

Let's say, for example, I want to scan a bunch of pieces of paper at
200 DPI and they are all 5.5" by 6.25". How can I store this setting?

The Brother website says its a Microsoft issue. I read another post
her saying its a Brother issue. I've browsed other manufacturer web
sites curious to see if their products under Windows XP offer the
features I'm lookng for (and had with my old scanner on Windows 98).
Can anyone tell me if I would have this capability with another
company, or is it a Windows thing?

Hi,

Have you checked settings in the control panel/regional and language
options? Also, check the time zone chosen under date & time.

I'm not sure what those areas have to do with my problem. It isn't
that I want to change the measurement units. I want to have more
direct access to the scanner settings without taking a lot of steps
(or losing the changes I make each time).

In any case, my region settings are USA, so that is not causing the A4
paper size. I suspect that may be due to Brother being a British
company. Or European.

More fundamentally, how can I create my own custom settings? Is there
a downloadable, alternative scanner interface other than the Camera &
Scanner Wizard?

Hi,

Dig deeper into the regional settings than just the initial tab - many
programs will look at regional settings to determine the defaults. If there
is an alternative program, it generally would be software supplied by the
manufacturer to augment the hardware. You should check with Brother support
on this.

It's not in the regional settings. And I've contacted Brother. They
say WIA does not allow easy override or saving of settings. One needs
a TWAIN compliant driver to do that, which they do not presently
supply.

It surprises me (though it shouldn't) that Microsoft makes Windows XP
so much more inferior at least in this capacity.

Does anyone out there have a work-around within WIA to easily override
the preset and store scanner settings?

So Brother doesn't want to supply WinXP compliant drivers, but would rather
have their users rely on WIA which was designed as a basic utility to handle
a huge multitude of the available hardware. Good reason not to buy from
them. This isn't an MS design flaw, this is Brother making excuses for their
lack of support. They know that WIA is like any other win-supplied program,
which is just enough to make it work, not designed specifically for any
particular hardware, the amount of variables that would be needed to provide
configuration for all supported hardware would be beyond what one could
reasonably expect.
