Wi-Fi & LAN network problem

My XP laptop has suddenly developed a problem whereby it cannot connect
either to an active Wi-Fi hotspot or to a LAN internet connection. The
Network Connections window shows "Limited or No Connectivity" although other
computers work just fine when connected to the same LAN cable and in the
same room with Wi-Fi enabled.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix the problem?

Also, the computer has become very sluggish and takes a long time to start
and shut down of late. I ran CCleaner, but that did not seem to help. Any
other ideas besides defragging?

Thanks

Presumably you haven't accidentally switched off the wireless? Some laptops have
switches that physically power off the transmitter/receivers. The same may have
also done it to your LAN ethernet connection.

Software-wise, click on My Network Places. It should display the available
network connections whether they be wireless, ethernet, firewire, etc.

See if the LAN connections are enabled or disabled.
